Al maanden sukkelt de koers boven de zeer belangrijke lows rond 80.25. Pogingen de jaren lange downtrend (sinds 1985!) te keren willen maar niet lukken. Ook op korte termijn blijft verkoopdruk hoog, getuige ropvorming tegen de eerste retracementgrens; verkopers gunnen de markt nauwelijks respijt of enige vorm van herstel.
Nieuwe aanvallen op de belangrijke steungrens rond 80.25 zijn waarschijnlijk. Koersvorming onder deze grens zijn eveneens niet uit te sluiten. In dit geval komen de all-time-lows van 1995 in beeld op 79.30. Belangrijker nog, de ultra-lange termijn downtrend krijgt dan een nieuwe impuls na maanden van consolidatie. Veel lagere levels liggen dan in het vooruitzicht.
Geruchten dat de Japanse Centrale Bank wel zal ingrijpen doen al jaren de ronde. Het effect is constant hetzelfde: een korte opleving gevolgd door weer nieuwe lows.... Erg effectief zijn de maatregelen - als ze komen - dus niet gebleken. Al met al, USD/JPY is uitermate kwetsbaar en op een cruciaal breekpunt aanbeland.
